2016 has been a year of significant progress for the National Lighting Bureau, capped off by what has become our National Lighting Bureau Annual Lighting Forum, produced by the EdisonReport and moderated by EdisonReport Editor and IES Past President Randy Reid. This year’s Forum, titled “Lighting on the Horizon,” will again establish milestones for the professionalism conveyed, for the quality of the speakers and the insightfulness of their comments, and the excellence of the production itself, something for which we owe a debt of gratitude to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers – IBEW – which provides us a wonderful studio to use, excellent equipment, and truly talented production professionals.

As always, the National Lighting Bureau conducts the annual Forum to share information with members of the lighting community as well as the general public. The “technology-transfer” involved remains extremely important, I believe, because of the dramatic changes being made by the lighting industry and the sometimes amazing progress that is occurring. As I said last year, and it bears repeating, “Major new developments, primarily in the area of LED lighting, wireless technology and IoT are occurring faster than ever before, and the pace will continue to accelerate. By keeping people ‘up to speed,’ the Bureau is fulfilling the role it was created to play. And to quote my predecessor, Howard Lewis, “As technology contributes steadily more to the future of lighting, the knowledge gap can grow wider and, in my judgment, the Bureau’s services will be needed more than ever.”

The Bureau is also making an important contribution by continuing to discuss High-Benefit Lighting® and the value it provides. As we have been saying for 40 years, light is for people. That means that the lighting that performs best is the lighting that helps people perform best, an optimization that can have a surprisingly powerful impact on the bottom line. But it doesn’t just happen. Lighting systems must be designed to achieve bottom-line impacts. In many cases, that is not happening. Decision-makers are often focusing on efficiency and not on the lighting quality aspects of High-Benefit Lighting, whose value can easily eclipse the value of energy savings by factors exceeding 500 per cent. And it’s not all about money: The Bureau was one of the first organizations to call to the public’s attention the fact that lighting has an important role to play in health and health care. Over time, we have seen this realization deepen, especially as light is being put to more uses and as we inform people about the results being obtained.

The Bureau continues to earn its salt by spreading the word. We have reached millions of people since our beginning in 1976, and 2016 is no exception. Bureau materials have been used by newspapers and their websites. We have been quoted in magazines and e-zines, brochures, newsletters, and websites; in Facebook and on Twitter; in textbooks, scholarly research reports, and white papers. Even television networks have come to the Bureau for information, as have organizations that need a speaker to provide information and guidance. We call the Bureau the independent voice of America’s lighting community; a trusted source of unbiased information about lighting, and that’s 100% accurate.

To help us spread the word ever more effectively, the Bureau is working on a new website. Tremendous progress has been made and I expect to see the new website up and running sometime during the first quarter of 2017. We will be able to showcase our Sponsors more than ever, and we will be asking all to provide content that can enhance the website, while showing off what our Sponsors have done and can do. We will also be looking for more Sponsors to get on board in 2017, and, to that end, we will be updating our recruitment materials. The more Sponsors we have, the more we can do; it’s that simple.

As Bureau chairs have pointed out over the years, one of the NLB’s original objectives in 1976 was bringing lighting information to those who were not being reached by lighting manufacturers and their communications efforts, including advertising. We continue to do that to this day, as the following list indicates.

We cannot be certain about how many people the Bureau reaches, because we only monitor the Internet, and only partially at that. Nonetheless, when the calendar shows January 1, 2017, the Bureau will have reached about six million or more people who want to know more about lighting.

None of this would be possible without the support of our Sponsors, of course, and I would be remiss if I did not point out how our staff – that means John Bachner – has been so important, too. This year marks John’s fortieth with the Bureau, helping us put our best foot forward to achieve our goals. Working together, our staff and volunteers have established four decades of credibility, making the National Lighting Bureau a highly regarded representative of lighting throughout North America and – indeed – throughout the world.

Serving as the Bureau’s Chair is an honor. It’s also very rewarding service, because, year in and year out, we accomplish our objectives. And doing that – working with such good people – is really a pleasure. I’m certain that 2017 will bring new challenges. And I’m just as confident that the National Lighting Bureau will meet them in a manner that will make the lighting community proud.
